By Kayla Miller SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Online dating has become the new dating trend of the 21st century for young adults.
Common social dating apps such as Match, Bumble, Zoosk, and OKCupid have taken over the hookup culture among the millennial generation. According to a survey conducted on Adobo.com, Tinder, however, is the most used social dating app among college students.
The app alone gains 1.6 billion swipes per day, resulting in 1.5 million dates a week.
People download the Tinder app for various reasons such as a quick hookup, finding love or new friends. However, a survey on Adobo.com indicated that 34% of college users downloaded the app for entertainment purposes or out of boredom.
Syracuse University junior Talia Zinder downloaded the app during her freshman year with her friends for the same reason. She didn’t know that sooner or later, she would meet her current love of her life on the app.
“I didn’t expect to find love, but I am thankful for that,” said Zinder.
Syracuse University Sophomore Sophia LaCalamita has been using the app since September 2018. She says it was strange seeing a huge number of new faces.
Social Psychologist Dr. Stanislav Treger explains the Sociometer Theory is about how people reflect the quality of our relationships whether they or good or bad.
“If you have good meaningful relationships, you’re going to feel good about yourself,” said Dr. Treger.
Relationships in the 21st century have changed since the 1950’s. It looks like this trend will not go away.
