Web Extra: What You Could Have Done With Mega Millions Winnings

By Anthony Mazzini N.Y. (NCC News) — Did you have your hopes up of winning the Mega Millions jackpot?

The jackpot was the highest ever, surpassing $1.5 billion, and the winning ticket is in South Carolina. But, if the winning ticket were found in New York, you could have done some interesting things with your money.

According to usamega.com, the jackpot for Tuesday’s drawing was $1,537,000,000, rounded to the nearest million. If you accept the lump sum, you could take home $877,800,00. But, let us not forget about taxes. The federal tax takes away about 24 percent, and in New York, the state tax takes away another 8.82 percent. That leaves you with a lesser total of $589,706, 040 for the lump sum, or you could have taken a 30-year payment plan which would have accumulated to more than a billion dollars.

If you accepted the lump sum, here are some things you could have bought:

A court-side season ticket for Syracuse men’s basketball for the next 89,349 years at this year’s price of $6,600 per ticket.

More than 84 million pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks at a price of $6.95 (plus tax).

More than 590,000 tickets to the World Series between the Red Sox and Dodgers, which are averaging $1,000 a pop for the first two games at Fenway Park.

How would you have spent your money if you had won the Mega Millions jackpot in New York?
