By Naiya Brooks SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)- Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Upstate Foundation, and Kohl’s Cares hosted a helmet giveaway on August 7th at Destiny USA.

“Today we have over 500 helmets that we’re going to be fitting on the kids within the Syracuse area. In past helmet fitting events we’ve been up into the Watertown area down into the Binghamton area, just Central New York we’ve been all over,”said Community Outreach Coordinator Kaitlyn Sperduti.

According to the Upstate Foundation website, the Kohl’s Cares Helmet Giveaway ‘s mission is “to provide free bicycle helmets for toddlers, adolescents, and teens in order to reduce head injuries and keep children safe when on wheeled activities.”

“There’s a lot of trauma situations happening and we reached out to Kohl’s for the need for this program and it was granted and we know more helmets on the kids, the less we see them in the hospital,” said Sperduti.

Families lined up around the Canyon area of Destiny USA to get their children fitted for a free helmet.

“It’s extremely helpful that they’re properly fitted,” said a local mother of three, Isa Hubbard.

The last giveaway will be on from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 25th at Binghamton Bridge Pedal.
