By Kylan Watson Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News)–When most people think of places to have a big event in the state of New York, they may think about New York City. Syracuse is making a case that it should be considered a place to hold a big event, after it was able to land the 2018 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Open Bowling Championship.

The USBC Open Bowling Championship  took place over a three month period. It brought in $73-$75 million dollars to the Syracuse area, and also increased hotel occupancy which was down this year. “We saw a spike in hotel occupancy especially,” said Danny Liedka, President of Visit Syracuse “which could not have come at a better time for us.”

Liedka believes that being able to have the tournament in Syracuse has raised the profile of the city, and makes them a serious contender for big events, and more events are coming. Liedka said, “We just recently were able to sign the New York Fire Chiefs convention. They have not been here in many, many years. So that’s going to come next June. That’s a three year contract and that’s substantial. ”

Being able to bid and get the tournament would not have been possible without the opening of the Marriott in Downtown Syracuse.  Liedka thinks that the opening of the Marriott near the OnCenter Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center played a big role in allowing them to have such a big event in Syracuse. With more investment possibly coming to downtown Syracuse. To make it more of a convention district. The city and the area might become a go to destination for events in the state of New York.
