By Sunny Tsai SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— The holidays are coming to town, or more specifically, to the Ronald McDonald House of CNY this Thursday for the Christmas in July donation drive.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities is an international nonprofit organization that provides housing and meals to families with their children in nearby hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House of Central New York, which has been around for over 35 years, is located just blocks away from Syracuse’s major hospital facilities. The house serves families who live over 15 miles away from Syracuse with a place to stay while their children are at the surrounding facilities.

Emily Whalen, Central New York Volunteer Manager, said that the house is meant to help lessen the stress and financial costs of the families. Each year, the Central New York location holds four big main events to raise funds and other donations for its organization to uphold its mission of provision. These events include a fashion show, golf invitational, gala and donation drive.

Whalen said that Christmas in July takes place during the summer because the house begins to run low on everyday household goods. As people donate largely during the holiday season, the summer drive may help restock the house until the holidays come around again.

The donation drive receives support from local businesses who participate annually. Different companies will hold their own drive throughout the month and bring the collected goods to the house on the day of the event.

This year, the house put its donation checklist on the Amazon wishlist feature online. People who are not local can look at it, order and send in packages directly through the e-commerce service. Whalen also said that families who have previously stayed at the Ronald McDonald House will donate items as a way to say thank you.

Alongside the drive that is taking place on Thursday, Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse is also hosting a benefit for the Ronald McDonald House this upcoming Saturday July 28th. It will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a motorcycle run from its Syracuse location to its Rochester one. All proceeds will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
