Syracuse’s Tournament Magic Boosts Sales in Local Apparel Stores

Syracuse Basketball’s Tournament Run Has Rejuvenated Apparel Sales (c) Syracuse Basketball

On Sunday, the 11-seed Syracuse Orange shocked the 3-seed Michigan State Spartans 55-53 to advance to its second Sweet Sixteen in the last three years.

Among the nation’s best, the 2-3 zone of Syracuse held the Spartans to a 26 percent shooting performance and forced 14 turnovers, controlling the game and allowing Syracuse to eliminate a presumed national title contender.

While the Spartans’ statistics suffered against the Orange, the statistics in nearby businesses have enjoyed very different effects of Syracuse’s tournament magic.

In apparel stores near the Syracuse campus, the tournament run has sparked business with new Sweet Sixteen apparel introduced this week. The official Syracuse bookstore, Manny’s, and Shirt World received shipments of new tournament gear on Tuesday.

Offering everything from t-shirts to sweatshirts to posters, the stores have capitalized on Syracuse’s success in the tournament and turned it into success of their own.

When asked to comment, the owners of Manny’s and Shirt World told me they had no time to speak because they were too busy stocking and supplying the new gear.

Syracuse’s tournament magic is great for the Orange faithful, in more ways than one.
