With the flu season approaching, getting a flu shot is a good way to ward it off. According to the Onondaga County Health Department, there were more than 1,500 cases of the flu reported last winter, while a number of those cases are athletes. Brad Pike, who is the associate athletics director of sports medicine at Syracuse University, who treats the flu at Syracuse, says that the flu is contagious and easy to get. “We live in a community, we live close together, we live uh sometimes two people to a room, sometimes four five people in a house,” Pike says, “and that really increases the opportunity for someone to get the flu.” Studies show the vaccine reduces the risk of getting the flu and having to see a doctor by 48 percent. Brad Pike thinks that people should take advantage of getting this shot.
