By Emma Pettersen, Skaneateles, N.Y. (NCC News)- After a long career in fashion merchandising and retail management, Lisa Dietz found herself at a crossroads. She and her husband were moving to upstate New York and decided it was time to have a baby.
But after a night out in the small town of Skaneateles, NY, Dietz decided to put their plans for a family on hold and start a new chapter in her career- her own boutique.
“We were going to name our first child, if it was a girl we were going to name her Emma James, so that’s what we named the store and its become our baby,” says Dietz.
Two years and two locations later, Dietz is happy but humble to report the business has been going well.
“I’m shocked at the growth we had. Its rewarding because I feel responsible for everything that is going well, but also I would be responsible for anything that didn’t go well. That is being a small business owner,” says Dietz.
She attributes some of the store’s success to its location. The store fills a hole in the retail market of being more fashion forward, but having a lower price point.
“The Emma James girl is fashion forward but also classy. I will do a trend like a choker but it will have a pearl. And most importantly she can afford it,” says Dietz.
This upcoming Saturday Emma James Boutique will celebrate one year in their current location and Dietz has aspirations to expand the business.
