Firefighters throughout Central New York are raising awareness as part of National Fire Prevention Week.
National Fire Prevention Week takes places in the week of October 9 every year. To take part, the Chittenango Fire Department is traveling to elementary schools through the week to teach students about proper fire safety procedures and how to prevent fires at home.
Chief firefighter Jason Baker said some of the most important things you can do to prevent a house fire are keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children and never leave food unattended on the stove. In a snowy city like Syracuse, Baker said residents should also keep a close eye on their space heaters.
