By Eshalaxmi Barlingay SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – Air Medical Services are in demand due to increased number of patients living in rural areas. However, these services are diminishing because of low government reimbursement for air medical providers. Also, most of the people living in rural areas have to travel considerable distance to reach and get proper medical treatment.
Even though people in Onondaga county have access to ground transport, the loss of air transport will affect emergency treatments and may result in loss of life.
A campaign aims to solve all of the above issues.
The Onondaga County Legislature recently extended its support for a National campaign, Save Our Air Medical Resources(S.O.A.R.). The campaign aims to provide air medical aid to rural areas, reduce the medical services cost for people and increase government reimbursement rates for emergency air medical transport.
Brian May, Onondaga County Legislator, says, “The cost of their (Medical Service Providers) services isn’t being compensated adequately which makes it very difficult for them to operate under low circumstances. ” He says publicly funded services will help reduce the burden on county tax payers, insurance payers and provide necessary facilities to whoever needs it.
S.O.A.R. campaign supports efforts at federal level and state level and aims to benefit people in both rural areas and medical agencies.
