By Jacqueline Mundry SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — For only the second time, all nine of the Syracuse mayoral candidates will be in the same place on Monday night.
There will be a forum held at the Southwest Community Center where Raymond Blackwell (D), Alfonso Davis (D), Chris Fowler (D), Howie Hawkins (G), Laura Lavine (R), Marty Masterpole (D), Joe Nicoletti (D), Juanita Perez Williams (D) and Ben Walsh (I) will be answering questions from moderators and members of the Syracuse community.
Although some say there are too many candidates, Blackwell said that’s not the case.
“It’s a good line up of candidates, and even though a lot of people have said that there’s too many, I personally feel like there’s not enough in a city of 140,000 residents, you want as many options as possible.”
The organizers said that they are intentionally holding the forum at the Southwest center because of the neighborhood it’s in and they wanted to be sure people in that area of town are getting informed about who’s running.
“People that are marginalized, people that live in neighborhoods near the Southwest center, don’t have the opportunity to research the candidates and make an informed decision.” Program organizer, Twiggy Billue said.
“It’s really important for people to have the opportunity to interact with not only their elected officials but people that are seeking to become their elected,” another program organizer, Dana Balter said.
Election season is starting to pick up with tonight’s event and will continue until the general election on November 7.
