Construction ensues after April the Giraffe fame

NCC News reporter Jamie Weiss took a trip to the Animal Adventure Park to learn how the Park is getting ready for opening season.

By Jamie Weiss HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (NCC News) — It’s been less than a week since April the Giraffe gave birth to a son, but construction has been going on for weeks in anticipation for opening day.

“We’re expecting our audience to double if not triple,” said Jordan Patch, the owner of Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville. “We need to build a completely new infrastructure, new park benches, new sidewalks, more to accommodate everyone.”

April, and her partner Oliver, arrived at the park in May of 2015. Patch said the two animals hit it off and they knew within a few months that April was pregnant. By January of 2017, visitors to the park began asking about April’s pregnancy since her 15 month mark was almost up.

“We received hundreds of messages asking about April…That’s when we decided to set up the giraffe cam,” said Patch. “It was streaming in February, but all of a sudden, a TV station out of Denver shared the stream. I woke up the next day with thousands of people logged into the live stream.”

Thousands of people continued to watch the stream up until the birth of the calf on April 15. Patch is taking down the giraffe cam tomorrow to make way for all of the construction, but April and the calf will be seen again – live in person by visitors to the park.
