SPD and DPS Prepare for Duke Game

By Katie Sciortino SYRACUSE, NY (NCC News)- Syracuse men’s basketball will be playing the Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday at 7 in the Carrier Dome.  If you’re going to the game, expect a large police presence.

There are three factors when the Department of Public Safety increases their police presence around campus, Syracuse Chief of the Department of Public Safety Bobby Maldonado said.  One of them is when the weather gets warmer, and forecasts show temperatures will be nearing 60 degrees starting Wednesday.  Second is when the crowd expectancy reaches 30,000, which Chief Maldonado states may or may not happen.  Last is due to the recent shooting on Marshall Street early Sunday morning.

Together, these three factors helped Chief Maldonado and the Syracuse Police Department to increase both SPD and DPS presence for the Duke game in the dome.

“Basically we’re probably going to have somewhere in the area of about 40 officers from the Syracuse Police Department and DPS.  You may see ten of them assigned by the SPD, then you’ll see another 20 or so assigned by the Department of Public Safety.  That number would increase,” Chief Maldonado said.

He shared that in addition to the officers in the dome, approximately 20 officers will be patrolling the campus area, particularly Marshall Street.  With the increase in police presence, Chief Maldonado doesn’t believe the recent shooting will scare off fans.

“We think that the level of crowds will be consistent with any Duke game, I don’t think people will be deterred,” Chief Maldonado said.

Syracuse is hoping to reach 30,000 fans for Wednesday’s game.  The last time was over two years ago during a men’s basketball game against Pittsburgh.
