By Matt Reil SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — As the fall season is quickly starting to show itself, so are some job opportunities in Central New York.
FedEx in Syracuse announced Monday that they are looking to hire 200 new seasonal workers for the upcoming holiday months. The work ranges from drivers to package handlers. The delivery company is one of many big businesses in the area looking for extra help.
Don Dutkowsky, Professor of Economics in the Maxwell School, said that’s good news for the local economy.
“Well for a few months we have increased employment, and increased jobs and increased income,” Dutkowsky said. “Whether it be by hiring new people or extending the hours of current staff.”
Large companies like FedEx, Wal-Mart, and Target aren’t the only ones who expand for the holidays. Many small local businesses’ do as well.
“Basically, it’s going to be if a guy is normally getting 4-6 hours a week, he’s probably going to double or triple that,” said Bruce Throne, Owner of Walts HobbyTown in Syracuse, “Once you get to the middle of December the flood gates literally open and people just start streaming in.”
However, not everything about seasonal employment is good. Many of the jobs don’t turn into permanent ones, Dutkowsky said.
“I was just looking at the unemployment rate data for Syracuse and it shows a big spike upwards in January,” Dutkowsky said, “That’s a sign that these are temporary employees hired for the holiday season but in January they get laid off.”
But for now, we might see some open positions as the busiest shopping time of the year is right around the corner.
