Low Gas Prices in Syracuse Lead to More Leisure Spending

By Nick Fathergill SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Low gas prices in Syracuse have created more ways for people to spend their money.

According to GasBuddy.com, a website dedicated to following and analyzing gasoline prices across the country, the average price for a gallon of gas is down nearly 20 cents from this time last year.  Currently, residents of Syracuse pay just under $2.20 per gallon on average, while they paid around $2.40 last summer.

Whether spending less on gas has a significant impact on everybody in the Syracuse area or not is unknown. However, for those with limited disposable income, the recent trend of falling rates is a very good thing.

“With the higher gas prices, I really do feel like it’s kind of a restraint, especially on someone with a low budget,” said Chris DiMaria, a Syracuse University senior and frequent purchaser of gasoline.  “But, with the low gas prices, it gives you a lot more freedom and a lot more freedom to do the things you want to do.”

DiMaria, originally from New Jersey, said he lives in an area that is especially inviting to transportation by automobile.  As such, he feels at home in Syracuse when he has the option to hop in his car and not worry about the cost.

Since he does not have the time to make a lot of money, DiMaria has limited financial assets, and he feels the lower gas prices allow him to use those assets in the ways he prefers.

“I’m thinking of going and hitting Niagara Falls, going up to Toronto, and I can do all that because I can fill up here with the lower prices and shoot up there, and on one tank of gas I can be there and back,” he said.

Using the extra money he is saving, DiMaria also said he likes to go to SkyZone and various restaurants on Erie Boulevard.

With more money circulating around the Syracuse area, the economy has nowhere to go but up.
