Newhouse Knows: Why you can’t take an Uber in CNY

Newhouse Knows is a franchise of “explainer” news stories produced by 2016 Broadcast and Digital Journalism graduate students at the Newhouse School. Explainer journalism clarifies the more complex facets of news stories, provides deeper background, or explains in greater detail how something that’s been in the news works or could work.

You have probably wondered why you can’t just call an Uber or Lyft for a ride to/from your home in New York State, and especially in Central New York. Lawmakers have been trying to implement ride-sharing companies throughout the state, but there’s still certain laws that create a road block for those companies to expand to New York. Alex Busch and Cullen Lea of Newhouse Knows will guide you along the path of local ride-sharing laws.
